* Approved by the Faculty Senate, April 9, 1984 and by the President, May 7, 1984. This Section applies to all instructional personnel.
1. Tests, Quizzes, Short Examinations
All examinations, with the exception of the final examinations, are scheduled at the discretion of the instructor within regularly scheduled class hours. Any change of regularly scheduled classes or examinations, must have the unanimous consent of the students involved unless other mutually acceptable arrangements for students to attend the alternative class or examination are worked out between the faculty member and the student(s) involved.
No examination totalling more than one half-hour may be given in the week prior to final examination week. Any deviation from this regulation must be approved by the dean of the college concerned.
2. Correction of Examinations
It is expected that each instructor will correct carefully the examinations in the courses in which he/she teaches. Students have the right to see their graded papers and discuss them with the instructor even if the papers are not returned. As far as possible, faculty loads are arranged so that an instructor will be able to handle this correctional work without being too heavily burdened. When a faculty member's teaching assignment will result in an unusually large amount of class work, or if enrollment of students becomes excessive in a particular instructor's classes, then special correction assistance shall be authorized by the appropriate academic administrator.*
* Approved by the Faculty Senate, April 23, 1984 and by the President, May 7, 1984.
3. Final Examinations *
* Approved by the Faculty Senate, March 8, 1976; amended by the Faculty Senate on April 23, 1984; approved by the President May 7, 1984.
Final examinations in any course may not be more than two hours in duration and must be given in the scheduled examination week at the end of the quarter. Exceptions to the rule will be made with regard to graduating seniors in the Spring and Summer quarters. Other exceptions may be made in specific individual cases and for educationally sound reasons only with the prior approval of the dean of the college concerned.
4. Final Examinations Scheduling
The Registrar's Office is responsible for the scheduling of all final examinations and assigns the room and times when various courses may meet for two-hour final examinations. The Director of Scheduling will prepare and publish the room and hour schedule of examinations.
The responsibility for all other aspects of the final examination process rests upon the academic department concerned. Department chairpersons are asked to assume responsibility for both the preparation, distribution, and collection of all final examinations, and the assignment of faculty or graduate students in the department to serve as proctors for the examinations given by that academic department.
5. Retention of Final Examinations by Faculty Members *
* Amended by Faculty Senate, April 23, 1984; approved by President May 7, 1984.
In order that they may be made available if a question arises about the final grade in a particular course, all final examinations, term papers, or projects which are not returned to students must be retained by the instructor or by the department for a period of one year.
