In case of emergencies of police, fire, or medical nature, contact the Public Safety Division at 373-3333 and state the nature of the emergency and the exact location.
2. Emergency Evacuation of Persons with Disabilities
Procedures have been established with the Public Safety Division to assist disabled people should the need for evacuating campus buildings arise. Each quarter the Public Safety Division receives a master schedule for disabled individuals on campus who have identified themselves to the Disability Resource Center. In the event of an emergency, Public Safety Officers will be dispatched immediately to assist disabled individuals in evacuating the building.
Instructors should inform Public Safety Officers if disabled persons in their classes have already left the building. Should assistance be required for evacuation, the instructor is requested to remain with the disabled person. (In the event of a fire, for example, elevators cannot be used, and wheelchair users would probably need to be helped down the stairs and out of the building).
Please notify the Disability Resource Center when the meeting time or place of classes has been changed for the maximum safety of disabled persons in your classes. Your assistance in this matter is most appreciated.
3. Emergency Closing of the University
Northeastern University has made arrangements to notify students, faculty, and staff by radio when it becomes necessary to cancel classes because of extremely inclement weather. AM radio stations: WBZ (1030), WEEI (590), WHDH (850), WRKO (680); and FM stations: WBCN (104.1), and WBMX (98.5), are the only stations authorized to announce the University's decision to close. Since ITFS-based instruction originates from live or broadcast facilities at the University, neither the classes nor the courier service operates when the University is closed. You are encouraged to listen to the radio to determine whether the University will be closed.
If a storm occurs at night, the announcement of University closing is aired at approximately 6:00 a.m. Classes are generally cancelled for the entire day and evening at all campus locations unless stated otherwise. When a storm begins later in the day, cancellation of evening classes may be announced. This announcement is usually made between 2:00-3:00 p.m.
When day classes are cancelled, most administrative, professional, and support staff need not report to work. Designated individuals who provide emergency coverage during storms receive compensatory time off at the rate of one and one-half days for each day of coverage when classes are cancelled.
The University is currently exploring a system whereby classes could be delayed for two hours when weather does not allow an on-time opening. The University community will be notified in advance as to how to proceed should this system be put into effect.
