Academic Investment Plan

At Northeastern University, we are investing $75 million over the next five years to enhance our academic programs in three key areas: undergraduate education, core graduate professional programs, and centers of research excellence.

Faculty Recruitment
The cornerstone of our Academic Investment Plan is the expansion of our faculty by 100 tenured and tenure-track professors over the next five years. To sustain the highest level of educational quality, we are adding faculty in areas of rapid growth, including communications, architecture, international business, pharmacy practice and multimedia studies, and seeking outstanding candidates to join our nationally recognized faculty in business, engineering, computer science, health sciences, and counseling psychology.

Undergraduate Education
Our top priority is ensuring the excellence of undergraduate education. We are the national leader in programs that link classroom study with real-world experience, and our flagship cooperative education program is a national model. The result: outstanding students from all over the country and world are coming to Northeastern in increasing numbers. Plus, we are investing in our technological infrastructure and library, enriching our honors programs, and adding advising and support staff.

Centers of Research Excellence
High quality research is a hallmark of any major university, and the 100 new professors joining our faculty will advance research efforts in many disciplines. Building on existing areas of faculty strength, we are fostering scholarly excellence in four fields of technological, economic and social significance: biotechnology, nanotechnology, sensing and imaging, and urban affairs and public policy.

Graduate Professional Programs
A graduate education is increasingly essential for success in many fields as well as a prerequisite for an academic career. Our goal is to reinforce our position as a leader in professional education by enhancing core graduate programs in Business, Engineering, Computer Science, Pharmacy Practice, and Counseling Psychology. We are also focused on expanding our doctoral programs and have recently added PhD programs in Criminal Justice, Physical Therapy, and Audiology.
